SJSU Commencement Feature

Comedian, podcaster and journalist Griffin McElroy will be the commencement speaker for the SJSU 2019 Graduation.

"This is wild," said McElroy. "I've done a few shows in the Bay Area and it has always been a welcoming place. I'm honored to be able to speak to the 2019 graduates."

McElroy has multiple podcast projects, the most popular being a Dungeons & Dragons podcast called "The Adventure Zone" and a satirical advice show "My Brother, My Brother & Me," both of which are co-hosted by his brother Travis and Justin.

"Griffin McElroy is a natural fit for this graduation class," said SJSU President Mary Papazian "his friendly demeanor, humor and most of all compassion echoes the values we have here at San Jose State University.

Detective John "Jigsaw" Kramer, a student who will be graduating with a masters in Mechanical Engineering is excited to hear the news that McElroy will be the commencement speaker.

"I love MBMBAM," said Det. Kramer, referring to the shorthand to "My Brother, My Brother & Me."

Det. Kramer continued, "...and I always found Griffin to be the funniest. He gets the struggle millennials go through."

Not everyone, however is on board with McElroy speaking at the 2019 commencement.

"Like, he's funny and all but what does he have to do with SJSU," said Minh Thi Phan, a law Major getting her bachelor's degree this year. "He's not even from here and like, comes to the general area twice a year to do shows. I don't get it."

"I love the Bay Area and in many ways it reminds me of Austin, so whenever I come here it's like my home away from home," McElroy said.

Though this will be the first time McElroy will be speaking at a commencement, he will actually the last among his brothers to speak at a commencement.

"I would have liked to speak at the 2019 commencement for SJSU, and would be happy to do so in future commencements, but I'm happy not only for my little brother being asked, but the graduating students to whom he'll impart his wisdom and humor," said Travis McElroy.

"As long as he doesn't beef it on stage," added Justin, his older brother.

McElroy was born in West Virginia and graduated from Marshall College and currently lives in Austin, Texas.
